FITCH-RONA ART CRAWL RAISES STAKES IN TWO-DAY LIVE ART COMPETITION
MADISON, Wisconsin—Monday, February 4, 2019 -- Across multiple art forms and spaces, 18 artists will create an original piece of art in real-time over the two-day Fitch-Rona Art Crawl in March. Each at a sponsoring Fitchburg or Verona business, artists compete for top cash prizes by creating a single piece of artwork over Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23, 2019.
A Live Art Competition & Reception featuring the finished works of art will be held Saturday, March 23 from 4PM – 6PM at Yahara Bay Distillers in Fitchburg. The winning artists’ entry will be announced at the conclusion of the reception with free live music by Spare Animals following.
During the weekend, attendees can observe the live art installations on Friday from 5PM – 8PM and on Saturday from 11AM – 3PM. At each sponsoring business, artists will also showcase additional art pieces as well as sell their works.
In addition to featuring a live art performance, Bella Domicile will host a small art fair to showcase additional artists. In celebration of the Fitch-Rona Art Crawl, on Friday, March 22, Steve’s Wine Beer Spirits on McKee Road will offer a spirit sampling at 4:30PM - 6:30PM. The Flying Hound Alehouse will offer an evening of Art Trivia on Wednesday, March 20 and a Yahara Bay cocktail and appetizer pairing menu on Saturday, March 23.
“Nothing like the Fitch-Rona Art Crawl had been organized previously, so it was fantastic to see how excited people were to come into businesses and interact with the art and the artists. A really nice touch was having the artists create a piece of art during the event as I thought that was something really special,” said Hop Haus Brewing Company Co-Owner Sara Hoechst.
Attendees who visit at least five of the live art locations and submit a completed passport may qualify to win a gift basket of locally-made artisan goods. Passports may be found at Hop Haus Brewing Company, Badger Prairie Needs Network and Yahara Bay Distillers and are due by Friday, March 29.
Verona Area Chamber of Commerce, Fitchburg Chamber of Commerce as well as the Verona Road Business Coalition have joined forces with Yahara Bay Distillers to produce this event which engages businesses and neighbors in celebration of the arts.
The Live Art Competition submissions will be judged by a panel of art professionals that include Annik Dupaty from Madison’s Museum of Contemporary Art, DABL’s Megan Blake-Horst and artist Julie Sutter-Blair.
Last year, Artist Megan Bloesch was awarded a $900 cash prize as well as the privilege to show her work in the Yahara Bay Art Gallery during the 2019 Fitch-Rona Art Crawl. This year, the cash prize has doubled to $1800 thanks to increased support from local businesses. One-hundred-percent of the cash sponsorships raised will be awarded to two artists who win the Live Art Competition: $1200 for first place and $600 for second place.
Distillery Marketing & Design created the Art Crawl’s new design that features vibrant colors and a hand-carved type and illustration style. The look is inspired by springtime and the one-of-a-kind pieces that will be created during the Art Crawl.
Badger Prairie Needs Network is a proud participant thanks to a sponsorship from the Verona Area Chamber of Commerce. The Network is one of the busiest food pantries in Dane County and offers free community meals, nutrition education for seniors & children, and more.
Another nonprofit, Rhapsody Arts Center, will serve as an artist outlet and is sponsored by the Fitchburg Chamber. The Arts Center seeks to support and protect arts-dedicated education in our community, through instruction of the highest quality and development of artistic resources while ensuring expressive access to all who desire it.
