The Paradox of Being a Black Police Officer in Today’s Society

Madison Police Officer Corey Saffold will share his experiences as a Black police officer in today’s society at the Verona Public Library on Thursday, August 9, from 7 to 8 p.m. Officer Saffold will discuss the challenges of being a Black officer during a time when police are often not trusted, especially among the African-American community, in the wake of multiple highly-publicized killings of unarmed African-Americans by police officers. In addition, Officer Saffold will share his personal experiences with law enforcement and his strategies for engaging the community at large. Officer Saffold is a School Liaison Officer at Madison West High School and is known in the community for his volunteerism and his work with youth of all ages and demographic backgrounds. This ShopTalk event is brought to you by the Wisconsin Humanities Council and the Working Lives Project, whose goal is to deepen and broaden the conversation about what it means to make a living and a life here. ShopTalk presenters spark conversations that explore the forces that have made work what it is today. ShopTalks aim to bring people together by creating opportunities for community members to reflect on real issues in a place of deep thinking and respect.
